Darius’ story

My name is Darius. I was referred to the employment support services after being made redundant and was very keen to find a new opportunity.

In my initial appointment with my employment specialist Denise, I was very focused on finding employment, as I had previously worked as a street cleaner for over 10 years.

My employment specialist started by reviewing my CV which targeted cleaning and welding jobs. Over the next few weeks, we job searched together, applying for various cleaning opportunities. It was a very challenging period as the libraries were closed and I had no access to a laptop at home.

Later I sent out my CV to small businesses, who I pursued independently with guidance from Denise.

After a month, she reviewed my progress as I had not had any success in gaining any interviews. English is not my first language, so sometimes communication was limited.

We continued searching, when an in-house employer opportunity arose with ISS as a part time cleaner. This was ideal for me. I was screened for the opportunity by the team leader and progressed to the next stage of being interviewed.

Before my interview, Denise spent two sessions going through interview question and answers, and emailed these through to my mother who was also able to support me in practising.

My hard work paid off as the employer was very impressed at the interview and I was later offered the job. After starting my new role, I continued to receive support from Denise.
